Career at Mdundo

Mdundo is a leading pan-African music service, with 26.6m monthly users across Africa. Its main focus is on 5 African countries: South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, and Kenya. At Mdundo, music is licensed directly from +150,000 African musicians, and 1.7m international songs are available through licensing agreements with Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Believe Digital. We aim to grow to 50,000,000 users before June 2025.

Mdundo’s mission is to provide the African mass market with a legal alternative to access music and downturn music piracy.

That’s how Mdundo came to be. Its CEO, Martin Nielsen, sees a bright future with one-fifth of all global-charts music created by African artists.

The Mdundo Team

Preventing Piracy
Global streaming services set the example to change the music industry — now, both creators and audiences reap the benefits. Also, it’s a viable alternative to pirating sites.

With the expansion in digital connectivity, we see the African market ready for new solutions and positioned for tremendous growth. So far, Mdundo has partnered with major telecom providers, such as Vodacom in Tanzania, Airtel in Nigeria, and MTN in Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. This solution not only gives us access to a 185-million customer base but also helps address another problem on the continent — the low usage of payment cards.

On top of that, Mdundo has to revolutionize streaming services to battle illegal downloads. Our approach is to fit the mass market in Africa by tapping into local consumer behaviors and needs.

Loving the Local
In Swahili, Mdundo stands for ‘the beat’. Our service has a lot of African footprint: we support local languages, music, and rhythms.

With Afrobeats being one of the fastest-growing music styles, we at Mdundo also acknowledge the importance of cultural diversity and local preferences. To grow our platform on the African continent, we had to factor in differences in each country’s listening habits and needs. More so, we cater to the local customer segments within these countries.

Last but not least, we truly beat the drum for African music. Thanks to Mdundo, it will become available to the whole world: nothing beats novelty when we’re stuck listening to the same well-known artists.

Gearing for Growth
Mdundo prides itself on the accessibility and usability of our platform. It allows you to browse, discover, and download music straight away, with no need for an app. All that is to make sure that getting music legally is as easy as following it! To further develop our product, we’re looking for a Senior Full Stack/Backend Engineer.

To see if we share the same working rhythm, we invite you to follow this recruitment process:

- HR interview with our partner Alcor;
- CV Review stage, where we look at your GitHub repositories or online projects;
- Home assignment;
- Technical interview.

Our hearts skip a bit, so excited we feel to look at your applications! Don’t miss out and join our African-music-oriented team!
